The main heroine of this story is Neva, a young warrior from the family of dragonflies, with whom both children and adults can easily identify. She is not portrayed as a perfect hero but as someone who doubts herself, fears failure, and wonders if she is capable enough—and that is precisely what makes her relatable to the reader.
In the story’s pivotal scene—Neva’s encounter with a boy rejected by the other children—we learn much about her empathy. It is not enough to simply possess a tool (an arrow); one must also have understanding and a genuine desire to help.
Neva’s character and the story would lose much of their meaning if the rejected boy did not appear—a symbol of every child (and adult) who feels excluded because of their differences. He wore glasses, the only physical difference from the other children, but this was enough reason for him to be excluded from the group. However, this harsh act does not make the story pessimistic; instead, it shows us that change does not happen through force, but through the awakening of self-confidence. Neva’s shimmering dust falling on the boy’s head does not transform him at his core but awakens what was already inside him—the desire to try again, to believe in his own worth.
The boy’s decision to bring drawing supplies captures the essence of the story. This moment marks the beginning of his transformation—not through revenge or proving himself, but through self-expression and sharing with others. When the children recognize his sincerity and talent, they forget the differences, which we interpret as a kind of victory of empathy over prejudice. The story’s closing line,
“We will always fight for happiness because life itself is only worth living for that,”
not only summarizes its core idea but also leaves a lasting conclusion—that happiness is both a goal and a struggle; it comes from within but grows stronger when shared with others.
