At the heart of this warm and simple story lies the idea of friendship whose strength sustains not only human relationships but also the natural order. Three friends — the dragonflies Ankira, Branica, and Alenka — represent a unity founded on understanding and embracing diversity. Their friendship is not superficial but deeply rooted in mutual respect and support. They not only share common values but also work together to preserve the world around them.
The tree that grows thanks to their shimmering trails symbolizes nature and creation, conveying a clear message — if we live in harmony with ourselves and use our gifts, we make the world a better place. Conversely, when envy and negative emotions, embodied by the fox Guja, prevail, balance is disturbed and destruction follows. In this context, the scratching at the tree’s roots metaphorically shows how envy can undermine the foundation of a community and threaten what is valuable and precious.
The story also raises the question of personal authenticity. Alenka is not ashamed of her sparkling trail, even though others see it as a threat or disruption. Her question — “What should I do? Not fly just to please some animals?”
— invites reflection on social pressures and the need to stay true to oneself. Themes of self-respect, freedom of expression, and inner courage thus occupy a significant place in this story.
The conflict between light and darkness, creation and destruction, friendship and envy forms the core structure of the narrative. However, the ending shows that recovery and renewal are possible, as the tree regenerates through love and unity, and the forest comes back to life. This optimistic conclusion, that even after being hurt, togetherness and sincere emotion can bring healing, leads us to the story’s main message: true friendship is the foundation of healthy relationships, both among individuals and within the community as a whole. What we do out of love and genuine connection has a real and positive impact on the world around us.
