One Day

One of the dominant themes in the Cycle of Dragonflies
is the transience of life and the importance of living in the moment. The story One Day begins with the narrator’s nostalgic feelings and memories of childhood and time spent with his grandmother. Speaking about the seahorses, the grandmother describes them as creatures that carry messages from the “other world,” which can symbolically represent something greater and invisible that governs the lives of all beings.

The Dragonfly, with its short life cycle, becomes a key symbol. At first, the narrator believes that dragonflies live only one human day, but through reflection, he gains a deeper understanding — the life of a dragonflies , in its brevity, encompasses all aspects of existence: flight, joy, freedom, beauty, defeat, and loss. This cycle of the dragonflies life becomes a contrast to human life, which is often filled with habits and routine, forgetting that every day has its own value

The brief life story of this insect challenges the human perception of existence: We humans often live life out of habit... but life is not a straight line, nor should it be! This perspective calls for living life with full attention and presence in each moment, and through the seahorses, we receive a powerful message — the only infinity that truly belongs to us is the present moment we have now.

Acceptance of transience and living in the ‘now’ is the key to true inner freedom and happiness. That is why the story’s ending carries an optimistic call to readers to remember life’s fleeting nature and to live fully with that acceptance.
